How to Build a Campervan
Welcome to BB Vans, where we specialize in building high-quality, eco-friendly campervans on a budget! If you’ve ever dreamed of turning a regular van into your ultimate adventure home, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll go through the rough steps we take to build a campervan.
Why Build Your Own Campervan?
Building your own campervan gives you the freedom to customize it exactly how you like. Plus, you can save a lot of money compared to buying a ready-made van. At BB Vans, we’re all about using recycled and second-hand materials to create unique, budget-friendly conversions that don’t compromise on quality. Let’s dive in!
This is a very quick and simple step by step guide, outlining the main things you need to think about. You can go in to every step in a lot more detail!
Step 1: Set a Budget
Building a campervan can cost as much or as little as you want!
We’ve built really basic vans for £800 in materials, we’ve also spent more then £18,000 on big fit outs! It can often be easier to start with how much money you want to spend, and work backwards from there. There’s no point listing all your wants and needs if you only have £800, you won’t have a walk in wardrobe, shower, toilet, and off grid electrical system with that budget.
When you know what you have to spend, you can prioritize accordingly.
Pro Tip:
If you’re working on a tight budget, look for second-hand or recycled materials. Sites like Facebook Marketplace and local auctions are goldmines for affordable, high-quality items.
Step 2: Choose the Right Van
Picking the right van is a big decision. Consider the following:
- Size: How many people will use the van?
- Condition: Is the van roadworthy and reliable?
- Height: Do you need enough space to stand up?
We recommend starting with something simple like a MK7 Ford Transit. These vans aren’t brand new anymore and can often be picked up cheap. They are easy enough to maintain and repair, and time has proven they are good reliable vans, just watch out for rust!
Step 3: Plan Your Layout
Think about how you’ll use your van:
- Sleeping: Where will the bed go? Will it be fixed or foldable?
- Storage: Do you need overhead cabinets or under-bed storage?
- Kitchen: Will you cook inside or outside?
- Workspace: Need a desk or seating area?
Sketch your layout and measure everything twice before cutting or installing. Planning is key to a smooth build.
Step 4: Insulate the Van
Insulation is crucial for keeping your van warm in the winter and cool in the summer. There’s a lot of different opinions out there, and the subject probably merits it’s own blog.
We insulate using PIR board, sheeps wool, or aerogel. We don’t use vapour barriers, from our experience these just trap moisture in the walls of the van and cause all sorts of problems!
Do your own research and don’t be scared to ask experienced van builders. Expect divisive comments on social media!
Step 5: Install Electrical Systems
Plan your electrical setup based on your needs. Common components include:
- Leisure batteries
- Solar panels
- Inverters
- USB ports and lighting
Make sure to use the right wire gauges, fuses, and isolators for safety and consult an experienced van builder or DC electrical professional if you need help.
Step 6: Add Plumbing
If you want a sink or shower, you’ll need a water system. This typically includes:
- Freshwater and greywater tanks
- A water pump
- Plumbing for sinks or taps
Keep it simple unless you’re confident in your plumbing skills.
Step 7: Build the Interior
Now for the fun part! Build your furniture and storage. Use lightweight materials to save on weight and fuel. At BB Vans, we specialize in repurposing items like old cabinets and turning them into beautiful, functional van furniture. Test the fit of each piece before securing it permanently. This saves time and frustration later.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
Add flooring, wall paneling, and ceiling finishes to give your van a polished look. Finally, personalize your campervan with curtains, cushions, and other decor.
