Installing Diesel Heaters

By BB Vans

Keep your campervan cozy all year round with a diesel heater! In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to install one step by step. Diesel heaters are affordable, efficient, and essential for staying warm in colder months. Let’s get started!

Why Choose a Diesel Heater for Your Campervan?

No matter how well you insulate your van, winters can be brutal. A heater is a must, but which type should you choose?

Why Not Electric or LPG Heaters?

  • Electric heaters: They consume too much power, which makes them impractical for campervans.
  • LPG heaters: They’re effective but much more expensive and come with a host of extra parts to consider (gas tanks, gas lockers, etc)

Why Diesel Heaters Are the Best Option

Diesel heaters are cost-effective and reliable. High-end models like Eberspacher cost around £1000, but affordable versions work just as well and start from £100

They can run off your van’s diesel tank or a separate auxiliary tank, making them versatile and easy to maintain.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Diesel Heater

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Diesel heater kit
  • Replacement fuel line
  • Replacement turret plate
  • Jubilee clips
  • Fuel pump and filter
  • Drill with bi-metal holesaw
  • Self-tapping screws
  • Rubber gasket or quick fists
  • Carbon monoxide alarm

Step 1: Mount the Heater

Choose the Perfect Spot

  • Common placement: Under the front seats, opposite the sliding door, or under the van on the outside.
  • Ensure it’s in a ventilated area and away from flammable materials.

Secure the Heater Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Some heaters come with a base plate; others may require brackets or screws. Ensure there’s enough space for proper ventilation and maintenance.

Step 2: Install the Fuel Line

Primary Tank Installation

  • Access your van’s diesel tank. Many models, like the Ford Transit, have auxiliary ports for easy installation.
  • If your tank doesn’t have one, you may need to drill (make sure the tank is empty).

Auxiliary Tank Option

  • Use a separate small diesel tank inside the van for easy refills. Drill a hole and install a quick disconnect fitting if needed.

Pump & Filter

  • Mount the fuel pump at a 15° angle, with the outlet being higher then the inlet, close to the fuel source as practical.
  • Add a fuel filter to protect the pump and heater from contaminants.
  • Use a rubber gasket or quick fists to minimize vibrations.

Step 3: Install the Exhaust Pipe and Air Intake

Drilling Holes

  • Drill through the van floor using a bi-metal holesaw. Protect the edges with metal paint to prevent rust.
  • Position the exhaust pipe to vent outside the van, away from doors and windows.

Exhaust Placement Tips

  • Avoid excessive bends in the exhaust
  • Install the air intake facing downward to prevent water entry and maintain a 10cm gap from the exhaust pipe.
  • Optional: Add a muffler to the exhaust for noise reduction.

Step 4: Route the Ducting

Distribute heat evenly by routing ducting around your van. Ensure the air inlet is positioned away from heat outlets for efficient circulation.

Step 5: Wire the Heater

Connect the heater’s cables:

  1. Fuel pump wire (already fed through the floor).
  2. Positive and negative wires to a 12V battery (usually a 20A fuse).
  3. Control panel wire.

Step 6: Test the Heater

Turn on the heater and:

  • Check for leaks or malfunctions.
  • Test the thermostat and timer.
  • Prime the system to remove air bubbles (usually done through the control panel).

Step 7: Install a Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Safety first! Install a CO alarm to monitor air quality!

FAQs About Diesel Heater Installation

1. How much does it cost to install a diesel heater?

The cost varies depending on the model and additional parts. BB Vans can install your heater from £250-£350 depending on the model of heater and your make and model of van.

2. How long does it take to install a diesel heater?

It usually takes 4-6 hours, depending on your experience and the complexity of the van layout.

3. Do I need a professional to install a diesel heater?

Not necessarily. With the right tools and following the instructions, a DIY installation is manageable. You can come into trouble when dropping the diesel tank, which is why most people opt to have a professional do it instead. If you are using an auxiliary tank, the job is much easier.

4. Can I use a diesel heater while driving?

Yes, as long as the heater is installed correctly and safely.

5. Is a carbon monoxide alarm really necessary?

Absolutely. It’s a vital safety measure to detect harmful gases.
