Let’s talk RivNuts.
If you haven’t heard of these handy little things, they combine a pop rivet and a nut, to allow for a bolt instead of a screw. They are a lot stronger then screws, and they don’t make a bunch of holes in your van because most modern vans have factory drilled RivNut mounting points all over the place.
The best tip I have for using RivNuts is to get some lipstick and apply it to the RivNut face, then press your timber up against it to know where to drill the holes! Perfect alignment every time.
We are really lucky to have some bigger equipment in our workshop that makes life a lot easier, and allows us to do custom jobs quickly and efficiently. I use my bandsaw a lot! It’s great for ripping down strips of wood to the exact dimensions you need. I new favorite thing for me is to use it to rip (split down the middle) old bits of timber, into useful sizes!
I’m building a nice wooden window surround out of reclaimed wood by ripping it down to size on the band saw. This type of wood was too thick to be useful for anything in a van, but not with a bandsaw!
